Deborah Cox

Deborah is researching Island and Headland Wakes.
Flows around islands and headlands in the coastal ocean frequently involve flow separation and the formation of wakes. The form of the wake depends broadly on the Reynolds Number of the flow and the resulting downstream circulations may be highly three dimensional. Wakes in the coastal ocean may influence the transport of pollutants, sediments, nutrients and fish larvae, and the distribution of other biological species.
Deborah is currently investigating the three dimensional structure of island and headland wakes and the role of ambient turbulence and other factors on the wake dynamics. Her project involves both field work and numerical modeling using ROMS (Regional Ocean Modeling System).

Maxwell is interested in stability of the Southern Ocean thermohaline circulation.
The Oceans, in particular the Southern Ocean, play an important role on much of the Earths climate system. Over the last 100 years, climate has experienced a dramatic change, partly due to human activity. The aim of my PhD Thesis is to assess the variability and predictability of the Southern Ocean-Atmospheric-ice system over the last 100 years and into the next 100 years, with a main focus (but not exclusive) to the ways in which the ocean may respond to the changing climate and its effect on the Australian/Southern Hemispheres climate.

Mehera is working on global biogeochemical modelling with the aim of describing biological processes governing nutrient and carbon cycling in the ocean. She is currently looking at the use of age tracers to quantify the biological response to ocean transport processes.

Greg is interested in Boundary Layer meterology, particularly in the Sydney Basin area. His project aims to assimilate data gathered from an airborne LIDAR system, in order to improve forecast data from a numerical weather prediction model.

Sarah focuses on the projected change in climate over Australia during the 21st century. Her work will involve seasonal analysis as well as annual. Sarah is also hoping to explore the impact of the projected changes in the extremes on human health.

Jan is investigating development of inverse methods with particular emphasis on determining magnitudes of vertical and lateral diffusivities through box model techniques:

Currently looking at mixing in the Mediterranean Outflow and exploiting the regions unique geometry.

Looking to apply the same techniques to a region in the South East Pacific and the formation of Antarctic Intermediate Water.
